Frequently Ask Questions
What makes Guided Steps Counseling different from other practices?
At Guided Steps Counseling, we’re here to support individuals who are ready for meaningful, lasting change. We offer thoughtful, depth-oriented therapy that centers on connection, trust, and genuine engagement in the process. Our goal is to create a space where you feel understood, supported, and aligned with the care you receive. Through this intentional approach, we provide therapy that is compassionate, effective, and grounded in integrity.
You’ll have direct access to your therapist — no coordinators or call centers in between. We value responsiveness and genuine relationships, so communication stays personal and supportive. Our work is grounded in evidence-based approaches, ensuring that your care is both compassionate and clinically effective. When appropriate, we collaborate closely with your other care providers (such as psychiatrists, physicians, or nutritionists), approaching those consultations with the same care and professionalism we bring to every session. We also support the integration of partners, family, and close relationships into the therapeutic process when appropriate, and welcome those connections as part of your care.
-
While many factors contribute to meaningful progress in therapy, the most important one is you. Your willingness to show up with courage, commitment, and vulnerability is what truly drives change. If you’re ready to better understand yourself, work through barriers, build healthier patterns, and strengthen your relationships, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
-
Your appointment time is reserved for you, so as soon as you arrive, we will begin the session and use whatever time is left.
-
Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes in length depending on the circumstances. Couples initial intake appointments may be 75 minutes.
-
We understand things come up. We ask you provide us with at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or change your appointment. You will be charged your full session fee if you do not cancel at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment time.
-
Your first few meetings will give you and your therapist an opportunity to get to know each other and decide if you are a good fit. You may be asked some questions about your background and goals for therapy. You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the therapy process, as well as discuss a plan for treatment. If for some reason you and your therapist are not the right fit, you will be provided with trusted referrals.

Talking with a therapist is different from talking with a friend or family member in meaningful ways. While loved ones offer care, connection, and shared history, therapy provides a dedicated space centered entirely on you. It’s a confidential, supportive environment where your thoughts and experiences can be explored without judgment or expectation.
Therapists bring clinical training and use evidence-based approaches to help you identify patterns, deepen insight, and develop practical strategies for growth and change. Unlike personal relationships, therapy is grounded in objectivity and professional boundaries, allowing for both compassionate support and thoughtful challenge when needed.
Friends and family play an important role in emotional support, but therapy offers a structured, intentional process designed to foster self-understanding, healing, and long-term well-being.
-
Your treatment length is flexible, based entirely on what you want to achieve and the issues you’re facing.
We can explore options ranging from short-term "brief therapy" (3–5 sessions) to long-term support lasting years.
Our partnership ensures we find a schedule that feels right for you while maintaining professional clinical standards.
-
Typically, sessions occur once per week; however, you and your therapist may decide to increase or decrease the frequency of visits depending on your progress and need.
